Ban E-Waste in Landfill

The SHOROC Councils are banning the kerbside collection and disposal of e-waste – or electronic waste - to landfill.

This will mean e-waste will not be accepted in kerbside collections in the Manly, Mosman, Warringah and Pittwater Council areas from 1 January 2010.

E-waste includes televisions, computers, printers, scanners, modems, DVD players, CD players, VCRs and gaming machines.

This ban and lobbying by SHOROC has led to the Federal Minister for the Environment recently announcing the introduction of a nationwide e-waste recycling scheme from 2011 and the introduction of legislation for extended producer responsibility (EPR) to make manufacturers responsible for the recycling and safe disposal of e-waste.

Why the ban?
Hazardous substances from e-waste such as lead, cadmium and mercury leach into the soil when placed in landfill. Valuable resources that can be recycled are also lost.

What can I do with my e-waste?
Councils will all hold centralised e-waste ‘drop-off days’ in the first half of 2010 for residents to drop off their e-waste free-of-charge.

There are also many other ways to recycle and re-use e-waste safely and responsibly.

Kimbriki to set up e-waste recycling
Kimbriki will have a user pays recycling drop-off in place soon.

Please contact your council for an upcoming collection date.
